Tell me how many times have you struggled to accept other people’s opinions about yourself? Be honest and admit that you didn’t even try doing certain things because others told you that you wouldn’t succeed.
This happened to me quite a few times and it made me wonder why we’re so heavily influenced by the opinions of those who don’t really care about us. The abovementioned quote is so powerful because it strikes through the heart of perception.
It also encourages self-criticism, self-love, and a deeper understanding of how human relationships work.
To help you better understand what I mean by these words, you have to start with yourself.
Your early childhood, the different people you met throughout your life, going to different schools, all your physical attributes, as well as your character – these all shaped you into the person you are today.
The way your mind perceives the world and everything around you is a direct consequence of what makes you who you are.
That’s why it’s difficult to meet a person who has the same way of thinking as you have because their experiences and values are different from yours.
And in some way, that’s a good thing. By hearing what other people think about a particular matter, you grow as a person and shape and adapt your visions as time goes by.
But sometimes, people’s perceptions can be unclear or even downright destructive.
Your world views, attitudes, and beliefs are a part of how you approach new things in life. How you’re going to react and what you’re going to say to the other person is directly connected with your core values and mental outlook.
And usually, when you meet someone new, you’re unable to see who they are.
Everything they do or say first goes through the apparatus of your own experiences and the final product or opinion you get in your mind is already influenced by who you are as a person.
That’s why you can never say that a certain someone is untainted and pure, because that’s not true. On one side, your perception is governed by the input of your own mind, and on the other, by that which you actually receive from the other person.
This is why sometimes others may trigger certain emotions or memories in you that are part of your history.
Our brain is a very complex machine that receives and stores millions of pieces of information every millisecond. Various external factors can influence the way you perceive others. How your day went before meeting this person or the kind of mood you were in when you first spoke to them – these can alter your image of the person.
Now, let’s turn the tables around.
So, if someone has a negative opinion of you, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re right and you’re wrong. It’s only proof that they carrying a lot of negative energy inside them that influences what they see in you.
We change our personalities, values, and lifestyle based on what others think about us because it’s our innate desire to be accepted by them. We are worried that some may see us as outcasts.
