I promise you that I will love you with all my heart, all my life. I will love you to the moon and back. Each one of you holds a special corner of my heart and there is no one in the world who can replace you.

Always remember that I am your ‘go-to’ aunt. Anything goes wrong – you have a fight with your little sister, you break your favorite game, mom and dad are upset with you – you can come directly to me without any doubts or hesitation. I promise you that no matter what happens, I will be here to fix things for you. I am the shoulder you can cry on. I will not judge you for what you did or didn’t do; I will listen to you completely, understand how you are feeling and then help you deal with the problem. If you don’t wish to deal with it, that’s okay too. I just want to make sure you are doing fine.

Help me to help you. Help me make things better for you. I know there are days when you just feel low for no reason. Sometimes, it all seems unfair. Trust me when I say that I have been there, too. I know exactly what it feels like to have messed up something badly or hurt someone or simply feel hopeless about your future. I will guide you and together, we will survive whatever it is that has been bogging you down.

As your aunt, I also want you to remember at all times that you are a good person. It doesn’t matter what someone says. I want you to know in your heart of hearts that you are a nice human being and you are good at what you do. Let people around tell you that you are bad at playing basketball. The more they discourage you, the more strongly you have to bounce back so you can see it for yourself what a great basketball player you are! And when you achieve that, imagine me sitting silently in a corner of the stadium happily clapping for you.

For me, you are the best at anything and everything you do. It’s when you start listening to your inner voice instead of the personal, uninformed opinions thrown at you by people around that you have truly begun to respect yourself. And that, my friend, will be a bigger achievement than any number of goals you score on the basketball ground.

Yes, there will be moments of uncertainty when you doubt your skills and capability. These doubts are not meant to pull you back but push you forward more vigorously to work harder for your dream. And this is where I come in. I will give you that little push you need to rebuild your self-esteem and work on your goal. Life will keep throwing unexpected things at you and together, we will keep smashing them right outside the window.

I am your aunt, friend, counselor, confidant, sister, and anything else you want to call me. And I promise you that regardless of what you consider my role in your life, I will be there every step of the way. I want you to know that there is someone here to talk to if you can’t share it with your friends or parents. You can call me your ‘adult friend’ who will be able to give you a friendly advice based on years of experience and a true concern for your well-being.

Moreover, whatever you share with me stays with me. It will not be discussed with your mom, dad, siblings, or friends. Feel free to bounce all your fears, aspirations and ideas off me. I’ll be right here, now and always.

If you have a family and a set of close friends, then you are luckier than you think you are. Please remember that everyone loves you. An argument with someone will not end the relationship or stop them from loving you. I can vouch for it. When everything else is over and everyone else has turned their back towards you, it is your family and friends who will be your support system and protect you in every possible way they can. Them and me.
