When people tell you to date your best friend, you always cringe for a moment. Then, when the initial reaction subdues, you’re left with a tingling feeling that this might actually be a good idea.
You probably have a male best friend that you’ve known for a while. It doesn’t matter if you’ve known each other since childhood or if you’ve created this bond later in your life.
It’s worth a try! How many times have you already talked about the possibility of you two being together? You’ve probably considered it, but you fought the urge for some reason. You told yourself that you’d never be more than friends, but now that you look at him, you can see just how amazing he is.
What if you gave it a try? What’s the worst thing that could happen? You fall in love with each other? Well, that sounds like a great ending, if you ask me.
You wouldn’t be here if you haven’t considered it already. You’re just looking for someone to give you an actual list of reasons why you should date your best friend. That’s where I come into play!
1. You know each other better than anyone else
Who knows you better than your best friend? He knows your favorite band, the things that make you tick, the way you like your coffee, and so much more. This also means that you talk about your relationships and dating life.
He knows what you hate in men and what instantly turns you off.
Imagine not having to introduce yourself to someone all over again. You already have someone by your side who knows you like the back of their hand.
You have someone who understands your biggest fears and supports your craziest dreams.
Why would you want to play cat-and-mouse with someone who doesn’t even care about getting to know you? You should be with someone who makes an actual effort to listen to you and hear everything that you’re saying.
Your best friend is definitely that guy and it wouldn’t hurt to finally be with someone who gets you and loves you, regardless.
2. You’re on good terms with each other’s families
When you’re good friends with someone for a longer period of time, you end up meeting their parents at one point or another.
This also means that you’ll meet each other in a neutral light. They don’t have any expectations of you and that helps them see the real you.
When they meet you as a friend, they’ll probably start making jokes about you two getting married to each other anyways.
When two people are together, it’s so important to be on good terms with each other’s families.
Especially if you have a good relationship with your parents, you want your partner to have that with them too. You wouldn’t want to be with someone who your family despises.
He’s definitely someone your parents trust. They know that he keeps you safe and that he’s always there for you, so they already consider him a trustworthy partner to their daughter.
3. You have a lot of fun together
It doesn’t matter what you’re up to, you always invite your best friend to join you on your little adventures. You know that you can have fun with each other without any reservations.
You don’t have to spend the night fighting about stupid decisions. And there’s no awkwardness.
Both of you love to spend time with each other because you’re into the same things. You go to concerts and festivals together. You go hiking, to karaoke nights, and to movie theaters together.
Isn’t this better than any relationship you’ve ever been in?
If you two were to make things official, nothing would change! You’d still have this, but you’d also share kisses and affection. The only new thing that you’d bring into the relationship is physical contact.
4. You skip the honeymoon stage
The honeymoon stage is the very beginning of a relationship and it’s usually the period where we completely ignore all the red flags. We tend to wear rose-colored glasses and forget that no person out there is perfect.
You’ve already seen the worst of your best friend. You know his quick temper and how his protectiveness borderlines possessiveness.
But you don’t mind these things. You are still on his side through it all and continue to be there for him. Nothing he’s ever done was so disgusting that you had to take a few steps back.
You know each other well enough to know that you won’t be blinded by passion. This is the healthiest relationship ever!
5. You know that you can trust him
He’s always been loyal to you, even as a friend. He knows all of your secrets yet always keeps quiet about them.
He’s never once deceived you by gossiping about you. Whenever he does talk about you, it’s always in a positive light.
That’s how you know he’s a trustworthy friend. He’d probably be a loyal partner as well! Whenever you do have an issue, it would be resolved between you two.
And you probably also know if he’s ever cheated on any of his exes. He said that he hasn’t and that he would never. He’s genuinely a good guy.
In today’s day and age, it’s hard to find men like him.
6. There’s a chance that you already love each other
What are the chances that you’ve both been this close this entire time without catching feelings?
Has he already tried to make a move on you? Do you feel like you’re just fighting your feelings for him?
If you don’t have romantic feelings for each other, then you at least love each other as friends. And let’s be honest, that type of love is so much purer.
At the end of the day, the best relationships are the ones where your partner is also your best friend. You just have an advantage from the very beginning.
You’re already best friends who care deeply about each other and who want the best for each other.
Who could treat you better than him? And who can love him better than you?
