Getting Over a Toxic Relationship

Written by Chloe M.

When you’re in a toxic relationship, it can be hard to escape, but when you do, you expect all of your problems to automatically disappear. However, it’s not always as simple as that. Getting over a toxic relationship can be just as hard as escaping it, if not harder. You have so much to process, and so much to move past, that it can feel like you’ve been sent packing back to square one. However, there are ways that can set you on the road to getting over a toxic relationship.

Accept that getting over a toxic relationship is no picnic

When you’re trying to get over any heartbreak, it can be difficult. When you’re hurt and damaged by what went down, it can be even harder. You shouldn’t expect your heart to heal overnight, the way you wouldn’t with any relationship. Even if you chose to walk away, if it was a difficult decision, you’ll be scarred by it. Give yourself a break and remind yourself that you don’t have to be ready to jump back into action right away. Wounds take time to heal, and you need to allow them an opportunity to.

Surround yourself with supportive people

When a relationship breaks down, it’s especially important to find a new support system. It can be difficult if your partner used to be the one who picked you up when you were down, but the chances are, if you were in a toxic relationship, you haven’t had that support for a while. Remind yourself that you deserve to be happy, and find people who can make you feel that way. Someone who can uplift you when you’re at your worst is the best sort of person.

Remember all of the reasons you broke up

A toxic relationship can sometimes have you craving more. No matter how much it hurt you, there was love there once, and it could still be clinging on to your heart. You will have some fond memories at least, and you can sometimes translate that as a reason to want to get back together. However, when you’re getting over a toxic relationship, you have to get out of bad habits. Your partner has trained you to respond to their emotional abuse in a positive way, so you’ll miss them even though they kept hurting you. Make a list of all the reasons why things ended between you, and you’ll be able to see more clearly why you’re single now. Remember that you aren’t the problem, even if you’ve been taught to believe you are. You’ve escaped now, so don’t fall back into bad habits.

Find love with someone who’ll treat you right

Don’t make the same mistakes a second time. When you go searching for love again, make sure you get it right. You will only fill fulfilled in love when you find someone who is going to treat you the way you deserve to be. Assess a new relationship carefully before diving in, and make sure you don’t have a false impression of a person before you commit to them. It pays to be cautious when you’ve had your heart broken. However, the one positive thing about a broken heart is that you can recognise danger a mile off. If someone isn’t right for you, you’ll know it right away.

Leave the past behind you

Our mistakes don’t define us, and they don’t define our future. Don’t let getting over a toxic relationship define how you view love. Love is the purest thing ever, and it shouldn’t be tainted by a bad experience.
