Thank You, Mama

Written by Chloe M.

Dear Mama,

As I grow older I appreciate you a lot more than I did as a teenage girl. I can’t thank you enough for all things you have done for me. Thank you, Mama, for shaping me into the person I am today.

Everything I am today is because of you. You’ve taught me everything. You taught me to walk, to talk, and to be the best version of myself. But Mama, I didn’t thank you enough. You were my best friend and my support. And when I was a teenager, I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have a mom like you.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without you. I wouldn’t have come this far. You’ve taught me to never give up. You’ve taught me to take every opportunity life gives me. And I did. You were my support. And you made me strong, but you taught me it’s okay to cry. You told me to keep going. You are the only one who never gives up on me.

I know we didn’t have a good relationship when I was a teenager. I was such a brat. And I didn’t listen to you. All the things which you forbade me were for my own good. But I didn’t realize then. I thought how you didn’t want me to enjoy my life. I thought you forbade me to have fun with my friends.

We had so many conflicts, and now I’m really sorry because I made you sad. I’m sorry for every wrong word I said. I’m sorry, Mama. I didn’t realize you just wanted the best for me.

I made you cry so many times, because of my friends, because I wanted to go out. But you just didn’t want to see your daughter drunk. You just didn’t want for me to become a drug addict. And you were trying your best to protect me. You spent so many hours with me, talking about life, and things I should enjoy instead of drinking in some bar with my friends.

You were telling me I should study harder, telling me how I should find my own path not to follow others. But I didn’t listen. I was telling you that you were old fashioned. I thought you wanted me to stay at home and do nothing to enjoy my life.

But now, I just want you to say thank you. Thank you, Mama, for the way you raised me. Thank you, Mama, for all things you have taught me, for all things you have said to me.

You taught me about what I deserve, and you never let me settle for something less. When everyone else was telling me I wasn’t good, you were there for me to tell me I am the best. You built my confidence to a place I couldn’t build on my own. You helped me feel unique and showed me what my great qualities are. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

With everything I do, you give me a purpose. You were proud of me when I got a good grade. You were proud of me when I graduated. And every time I don’t think I can handle something, I just think of you. And I know how proud you would be if I do it. Thank you for being someone I can make proud.

Thank you, Mama, for being the best friend I’m ever going to have. When I try new things, you cheer me on. You support me in deciding to be whatever I want to be.

Thank you, Mama, for helping me figure out ways to be the best possible version of myself. Thank you for never telling me I can’t do something.

You show me unconditional love. You show me how to be strong.

I’m not going to live at home forever, but I promise you I will always come back. It is always going to be my home because no other place is going to be the same.

Thank you, Mama, for loving me even when I was a big brat. Thank you, Mama, for understanding.

You are such a beautiful person, and I just can’t thank you enough for being my Mama. I love you so much.

Dear Mama, thank you, for everything.
